Flood Havoc in Nairobi as New Sports Ground Wiped Out by Raging Waters
The newly built Kinyago Sports Ground in Kamukunji didn’t stand a chance against the recent floods that overwhelmed Nairobi.
Heavy rains that pounded the city turned low‑lying areas into fast‑moving torrents, sweeping away fields, facilities and local landmarks across Kamukunji. What was once a place for children and youth to play and train was washed out by floodwaters that have battered parts of the capital.
These floods hit hard because the ground was already soaked from days of sustained rain, and drainage systems couldn’t keep up with the deluge.
Local residents watched helplessly as water surged through neighborhoods, closing roads and forcing families to evacuate. Kamukunji, like many Nairobi suburbs, has seen rivers and stormwater channels overflow after downpours.
The once‑proud community spaces like the Kinyago Sports Ground are now part of the long list of infrastructure damaged by climate‑linked flooding.
